Let’s face it… driving these days isn’t cheap. Between gas prices and maintenance costs, it can all add up quickly. So, when there’s a chance to save a little without cutting corners, it’s worth exploring.

That’s where Allstate Canada’s Drivewise app comes in. Sure, it’s an app that offers potential discounts for safe driving – but it’s also way more than that! It’s a smart, easy-to-use tool that helps you build better driving habits with real-time feedback.

Beyond the Discount: Real-Time Driving Insights

One of the coolest things about Drivewise is how it makes safe driving feel rewarding, and even a little fun. So, how does it work?

How Drivewise Works Behind the Scenes

Drivewise isn’t just smart – it’s built with advanced technology developed specifically by Allstate and its trusted partners, which helps calculate your personalized discount and provide feedback on your habits.

To make sure Drivewise can accurately track your trips, you’ll need to enable location services on your phone or directly within the app. This ensures the app knows when and where you’re driving so it can give you the most accurate insights and rewards.

What Does Drivewise Track, Exactly?

Once you download the app, it monitors your driving habits over a six-month period. It tracks things like:

  • Your speed
  • How hard you brake
  • When you’re driving (For example, noon – 6:00 pm on a Friday – statistically one of the riskiest times to be on the road, according to Allstate data

It’s kind of like you’re back in driving school! Except for this time, you have a virtual coach riding shotgun, helping you spot risky habits and improve over time.

Now that you know how Drivewise tracks your habits, let’s talk about how those habits can actually earn you a discount.

Influencing Your Discount

Keep in mind – your savings aren’t automatic – you need to earn them! To qualify, you’ll need to drive at least 1,000 km during the six-month monitoring period. The better your driving habits, the higher your discount (you can save up to 30% off your annual premium!).

Remember to watch your speed (driving over 125 km/h can hurt your score, so stick to posted limits and adjust for road conditions), avoid hard braking by keeping a safe distance from the car in front of you, and drive during safer times.

You can also track your progress in the app with a report card-style summary that shows your driving events, trip details, distance driven, and even your top speed.

Smart Data: What You Need to Know

If you’re a passenger during a trip, the app may still record your trip as if you were the one driving. To keep things accurate, you can mark any trip as a “passenger” ride in the Trip Audit menu. Whether you’re in a cab, on a bus, or even riding the subway, Drivewise can usually detect that based on your speed and route. And if it doesn’t, you can manually flag the trip afterward.

And when it comes to privacy, Allstate takes it seriously. Your personal information – including what’s collected through Drivewise – is kept confidential. Data isn’t stored indefinitely and won’t be used for anything outside the app unless required by law or with your consent. For full details, you can always check out Allstate’s Privacy Policy

Ready to Drive Smarter?

Distracted driving is one of the leading causes of collisions in Canada. Whether it’s texting, scrolling, or adjusting your playlist, even a moment of inattention can have serious consequences.

Drivewise is a great way to become more aware of your habits behind the wheel, but there are other ways you can minimize distractions, leading to less accidents, and potentially lower insurance costs:

  • Keep your phone on silent and out of reach
  • Adjust your seat, mirrors, etc., before you start moving
  • Pull over for a snack break
  • Load your directions before you leave

Among many others! To learn more about how you can practice safe driving and minimize distractions, head over to this blog post.

Insurance Matters: Why Coverage Is Just as Important as Safe Driving

Drivewise is a great way to earn discounts and improve your driving, but it’s just one part of a smart insurance strategy. Having the right car insurance means you’re protected when the unexpected happens.

Whether it’s a fender bender or something more serious, coverage gives you peace of mind and financial protection. If you’re not sure what kind of coverage you have – or what you might need – it’s a good idea to review your policy or speak with an Allstate agent.

So why not give it a try? Download the Drivewise app, hit the road, and start earning your discount while building better driving habits. It’s free to use, risk-free to try, and could be the smartest move you make behind the wheel.
