As a part of the 10th anniversary of Allstate Canada’s annual Safe Driving Study, we asked Canadians to submit ideas on how we could help enhance or improve road safety in their local communities through our Allstate Takes Action contest. We had so many great responses from Canadians across the country. We are excited to announce that Dave Peixoto has been selected as the contest winner. As a pedestrian and a driver, Dave noticed that his community was struggling to understand the rules of the road around roundabouts. As a result, he requested an education blitz on roundabout safety in Nepean, Ontario.

Have you ever approached a roundabout and felt unsure on how to properly proceed? You are not alone! With a little help from professional hockey player Jean-Gabriel Pageau, some of our local Allstate agents, and the support of Canadian police officers, we created a how-to video and infographic illustration on roundabouts.

Some key tips to remember when using roundabouts:

• When entering monitor traffic flow and approach at lowered speed
• When you’re in the roundabout drive in a counter-clockwise direction until you reach your exit
• Stay in your chosen lane, and don’t pass other vehicles
• When exiting use your right-turn signal and check your mirrors and blind spots as you approach your exit

As we head into the winter season, it is also important to remember all safe driving tips!

Some top findings according to Allstate Canada collision claims data:

• Friday’s are the worst day to drive as they see the highest frequency of collisions
• Rear-enders are the most common type of collision
• The next most common collisions occur at intersections while vehicles turn
• The most severe types of collisions involve pedestrians and cyclists
• Sunday is the safest day to drive

Hearing directly from community members like Dave helps Allstate identify issues and share information that may prevent collisions on our roads and help protect everyone who uses them – including drivers, cyclists and pedestrians.
