5 Ways to Overcome the Fall Blues

It was unavoidable: summer is definitely over and we have entered the fall season. Now we are faced with busier schedules, cooler weather, more layers, and the realization that long weekends have officially ended for the year. While there is less sunshine, our days feel longer, and winter break seems that much further away. If you catch yourself feeling unmotivated and uninspired this time of year, you are not alone! You might be experiencing symptoms of the ‘fall blues’, otherwise known as seasonal sadness or seasonal affective disorder (SAD). But, there are ways to help push through and come out the other (sunny) side.

Here are some tips to help you defeat the fall blues:

  1. Limit screen time – Whether it’s binge-watching your favourite show or getting lost in social media, we are constantly surrounded by electronic screens. Through our constant engagement with the internet, it is easy to lose ourselves in the digital world. Limiting your tech usage can benefit your mental health, which can lead to a happier lifestyle. Try to incorporate device-free times in your daily routine.
  2. Water, water, water – Did you know that more than half your body weight is made up of water? That’s why dehydration can significantly decrease your energy and mood. Try having a full water bottle near you at all times and set daily water intake goals. If drinking water is too dull, try infused water by putting fruit like lemon, lime or strawberries into your water bottle.
  3. Upbeat playlists – Happy, feel-good music can lift anyone’s mood. Create an upbeat playlist for yourself and turn it on when you get ready in the morning, or during your commute. It will help get you in the mood to start your day on the right foot!
  4. Talking to friends and family – Opening up to trusted confidants about what’s going on in your life is a step in the right direction to curing any setbacks. When confiding in people you trust, you open yourself up to receive encouragement, advice and peace of mind knowing that you are not alone.
  5. Staycations –Taking time out for yourself is crucial for your wellbeing, and it doesn’t always have to involve pricey flights and lots of stressful planning. Try to kick back and relax in your own home or even on a weekend getaway at a location close to your city or town. Immerse yourself in the moment and enjoy.
