How to Best Celebrate your Mom this Mother’s Day

As a kid, celebrating Mother’s Day was always a big event, usually involving extended family, a big picnic at a park and presents. When I was younger, Mother’s Day was all fun and games; a reason for celebrating and gathering with family. It wasn’t until I became a mom myself that I truly appreciated the importance of this day. While mothers should be celebrated and thanked for what they do every day, it’s nice to take a moment… an entire DAY, to formally stop, reflect and celebrate everything that is being a MOM!

Now a mother myself, I often think about how I want to celebrate Mother’s Day, or as I often refer to it now: MY DAY (not to be confused with birthday). Some moms would prefer to celebrate surrounded by family and loved ones while others would prefer to spend the day alone, in a relaxing manner they may not have had the opportunity for otherwise. Personally, my ideal Mother’s Day would include the best of both worlds; some time alone to relax, and some quality time with my family.

If you’re looking for  ideas on how to spoil your mom on Mother’s Day –or perhaps you’re a mom looking  to send some “subtle” hints to your family about how best to celebrate —  here are some suggestions.

Pamper

Moms love to be pampered! You can do this by getting your mom a “day at the spa” package, which typically includes a massage or some sort of body treatment. If your mom is not into this type of pampering, you can always do something more traditional like sending her to the salon for a hair style or to get her nails done. Depending on what your mom prefers, she can enjoy this experience solo, you can join her, or you can coordinate it so she can go with a friend. If the spa experience is out of your budget, you can get creative and give her a “spa” day at home, including a pre-filled bubble bath, time for a nap and a home-style manicure and pedicure given with love by the kids.

Wine & Dine

Many moms spend a lot of time in the kitchen, which means they spend a lot of time thinking about food, buying food, cooking and baking. Even if your mom finds this activity relaxing, it is always nice to get a break once in a while. On Mother’s Day, kick your mom out of the kitchen and take over! You may start with some breakfast in bed and continue to take care of the meals for the rest of the day. If you don’t enjoy cooking, you can take her out for dinner or order in (a perfect alternative for families with young children). You can also gather the extended family or your mom’s close friends and organize a potluck brunch complete with her favourite meal, desserts and spirits.

Gifts

Mother’s Day is a celebration after all, and what’s a party without presents? But that doesn’t mean you have to spend a fortune. You can shower your mom with gifts like jewellery, flowers, books, chocolates or a gift card to her favourite store. Alternatively, you can shower her with a more affordable and sentimental gift such as handmade crafts and drawings by the kids, having her favourite family picture framed, or getting the kids to perform a song and dance.

At the end of the day, however you choose to celebrate and spoil your mom on Mother’s Day is entirely up to you, just make sure you take the time to recognize and thank your mom!
